The difficulties the Democratic Party has been facing for some time came to light at the party’s 15th Regular Congress, which began with the slogan “The Word Belongs to the People Once Again.” DP Istanbul Representative Cemal Enginyurt and DP Izmir Representative Salih Uzun announced a few days ago that they would not be attending the convention.
However, a development that occurred at today’s convention caused tension.
After the Divan chair announced that some of the signatures collected on behalf of presidential candidate İlay Aksoy had been withdrawn by the delegates who had signed them, and that some signatures had been deemed invalid—and that, as a result, her candidacy had not been accepted—Aksoy responded with the following words:
“You staged a coup against your own party today. You’ve undermined the will of so many people. You’re no different from the AK Party. You staged a coup—this party isn’t like that. Shame on you.”
It is alleged that they will resign
Following the latest development, rumors have spread in political circles that Enginyurt and Uzun—two of the three members of parliament affiliated with the Democratic Party alongside its Chairman, Gültekin Uysal—will resign from the party.
However, according to information obtained by Halkweb from sources close to both individuals, Enginyurt and Uzun—who are well-known to the public—will make their final decisions following a one-on-one meeting tomorrow, which will also be attended by a group of their fellow party members. If a decision to resign is made at this meeting, both members of parliament are expected to share their reasons with the public via a video.
