There is a class in Turkey that has gone unquestioned for years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What a capitalist class\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What a political class\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What a hassle\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What a media\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

All of them have, at one time or another, been criticized, put on trial, punished at the ballot box, or held accountable by the public.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But there was a group that saw itself as standing above all these mechanisms.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They introduced themselves as artists.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then they called him an intellectual.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then they called him a community leader.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then they called it the conscience of society.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, they saw themselves as having the authority to speak on behalf of the people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And that\u2019s exactly where the big problem began.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because as the number of people speaking on behalf of the people has grown, the people themselves have disappeared.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There were people in the squares, but the microphone was in someone else\u2019s hands.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The public was there at the elections, but the same people were the ones speaking.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Poverty belonged to the people, but the podium belonged to others.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The pain was his, but it was others who told the story.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And over the years, a strange routine developed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A group of people gained immunity by speaking on behalf of the public.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They were the ones who criticized, yet they were the ones who weren\u2019t criticized.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Some demanded answers, but others refused to provide them.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They acted like they were giving lessons in morality, but they never took a hard look at their own moral standards.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Today, that system is crumbling.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because for the first time, the question is taking a different turn.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For the first time, the people are speaking out.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For the first time, the podium is being set up from the bottom up.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And for the first time, the following question is being asked:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ve been speaking on behalf of the people for half a century.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So what have you done for the people?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This question upsets some people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because for years they thought that singing songs about poverty was the same as finding a solution to poverty.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is not.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For years, they believed that reading poetry about labor was the same as touching the lives of workers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is not.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For years, they thought that talking about justice was the same as fighting for it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is not.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Talking is a different matter.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Producing is a different matter.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Getting applause is a different matter.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Leaving a legacy is another matter.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Today we look back.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Tens of thousands of concerts\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Hundreds of festivals\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Thousands of TV shows\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Countless political statements\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So, what's the result?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> How many schools?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How many dorms?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How many scholarship funds?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How many soup kitchens?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How many enduring social institutions?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A work that has changed the lives of how many generations?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is where a very serious question arises:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Did those who spoke on behalf of the people truly speak for the people?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Or was the public the most valuable asset they used to build their careers?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because the picture that has emerged in recent years shows that:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They once said, \u201cArt is for art\u2019s sake.\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Then they said, \u201cArt is for society.\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But in practice, a completely different approach emerged.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

No one gave it a name.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But everyone saw it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The name of the new movement was:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cArt is for profit.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

THE PRIVILEGED CLASS OF THE FESTIVAL REPUBLIC<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Every era has its own aristocracy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At certain times, this aristocracy draws its strength from its titles of nobility.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At times, from wealth.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At times, because of bureaucracy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In Turkey, however, a different kind of aristocracy has emerged over the past thirty years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The cultural elite.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They didn't win any elections.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What a party they threw.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They didn't hold themselves accountable to the public.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But they tried to impose moral control over society.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because they had microphones in their hands.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because they were able to appear on screen.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because the newspapers were reporting on them.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because municipal stages were open to them.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And over time, an invisible network of privileges emerged.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From festival to festival\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From concert to concert\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From panel to panel\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The same names.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Same faces.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The same circles.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The same applause.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The same political relations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

While millions of young artists in Turkey are struggling to make ends meet, it was no coincidence that the same names have been circulating in the same organizations for years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This was the result of a cultural system.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A self-contained system.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A system that generates its own references.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A system that applauds itself.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A self-reinforcing system.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And most importantly\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A system that proclaims itself to be the representative of the people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is where a major contradiction arises.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because a significant number of those who speak on behalf of the people no longer live the same lives as the people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They're talking about poverty.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But they aren\u2019t living in poverty.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They're talking about financial difficulties.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But they don\u2019t have any financial difficulties.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They're talking about the public's anger.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But they don\u2019t live among the people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They're talking about the people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But are they turning back to the public?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

No, no, no.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because, over time, they drifted away from the society they claimed to represent.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, they became part of a new community.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The cultural elite.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Municipal circles.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The protocol tables.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Private events.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Centers of political power.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And that is precisely why the debate taking place today is not merely a debate about art.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is a class discussion.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because a significant portion of those who spoke on behalf of the people for years have now become spokespeople not for the people, but for the cultural order they themselves have established.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That is why the same people supported the same politicians.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The same people were involved in the same political campaigns.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The same people have gathered around the same centers of power.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And for years, they claimed they were doing this \u201con behalf of the people.\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

No, no, no.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Not on behalf of the people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They did it in the name of the cultural sphere of influence they had established.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Today, for the first time, that issue is being examined.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For the first time, the following question is being asked:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You have spoken on behalf of the people for all these years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So what did the people give you?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And what have you given back to the people?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That is the hardest question to answer.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because it\u2019s easy to get applause.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It's easy to find a microphone.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It's easy to be hailed as a hero.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The real challenge is to leave behind a tangible social legacy when we look back.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And it seems that those who have been handing out report cards to others for years are now, for the first time, having to face their own.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

IT IS NOT THE SONG THAT CHANGES, BUT THE WIND<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

History can sometimes be very cruel.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because it has an archive.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Saves photos.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It saves conversations.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He keeps his songs to himself.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It keeps what was said yesterday.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And when the time comes, it presents itself to a person.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is precisely what lies at the heart of today\u2019s debate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because the collective memory of society sees this:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Those who stood on the same podiums yesterday are acting as if they were strangers to one another today.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Those who were praising the same people yesterday are now putting them in the crosshairs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Those who applauded yesterday are cursing today.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Those who walked side by side yesterday are acting today as if they had never walked together.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

One can't help but ask:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What has changed?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Have the songs changed?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Have the folk songs changed?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Have the terms changed?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Or has the balance of power shifted?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because there is a growing sense that, for some artists and intellectuals, the wind\u2014not principles\u2014is their true compass.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To turn whichever way the wind blows\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Moving toward the center of power\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To forget old friends when a new center of power emerges\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And then to call that a \u201cmoral stance\u201d\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is exactly what the public objects to.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

No one is saying that people can\u2019t change their minds.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

No one is saying you can\u2019t criticize.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But when you defend the exact opposite of what you said yesterday, you have to answer for your actions from yesterday.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because there can be no morality without consistency.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There can be no conscience without consistency.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Without consistency, there is no right to lecture the public.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is exactly the problem some people are facing today.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For years, they sat in a position of moral superiority.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They decided who was a democrat.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They decided who was progressive.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They decided who was modern.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They decided who was acceptable.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It was as if they had set up a cultural tribunal.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They became prosecutors.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They took control.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They served on the jury.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They made the decision themselves.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But they never took the stand.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It's their first time sitting down.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For the first time, the public is asking:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ve been judging everyone for years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So who will judge you?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ve been grading everyone for years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So who will read your report card?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For years, you\u2019ve questioned other people\u2019s integrity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So when are you going to answer for your own consistency?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps that is the reason for the anger we are seeing today.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because the roles are switching for the first time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For the first time, the microphone isn't working on one side.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For the first time, those speaking on behalf of the people are facing the people\u2019s questions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And the most difficult of those questions is this:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Were you being sincere yesterday when you were writing songs for those same people?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Or are you being sincere when you attack those same people today?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Both cannot be true.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because the truth never changes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But the situation could change.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And it seems that for some people, it is not the truth that changes, but their position.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That is why the debate taking place today is not a debate about art.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It's a character debate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is a debate about consistency.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And perhaps most importantly\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It's a debate about sincerity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

THRONES ARE SHAKING<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Every system is founded on legitimacy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Political systems derive their legitimacy from the ballot box.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Legal systems are based on the constitution.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Economic systems are based on production.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Cultural norms, on the other hand, stem from the respect accorded by society.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

That is precisely why a major turning point is taking place today.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because that cultural prestige, which has been accepted without question for years, is now being seriously questioned for the first time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For the first time, people are asking:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Who gave you the authority to speak on behalf of the people in this country?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On what basis do you claim to represent the conscience of millions of people in this country?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In which election were you elected?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What kind of social scrutiny have you been through?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

To whom did you report?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And most importantly\u2026<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How much of the advice you\u2019ve been giving the public over the years have you actually put into practice in your own life?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This is where the real crisis of the cultural aristocracy begins.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because the routine they were used to was different.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They were the ones speaking.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It was the people who were listening.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They were the ones who judged.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It was others who were on trial.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

They were the ones asking the questions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It was others who answered.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Now the tables are turning.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And this change is causing serious concern for some people.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because for the first time, the public is shifting from merely applauding to questioning.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For the first time, it appears that artists can be held to the same scrutiny as political leaders, businesspeople, and journalists.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Yet that is exactly what democracy is.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A system where no one is sacred.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A realm where no one is off-limits.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A collective memory in which no one can rewrite the future by erasing the past.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Kemal K\u0131l\u0131\u00e7daro\u011flu is not at the heart of today\u2019s debate either.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

There is no internal party conflict either.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The real issue is much bigger.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The real issue is that a group that has been speaking on behalf of society for years is now beginning to be questioned by society itself.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because people don't just look at what you say anymore.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It depends on how you live.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It depends on what you produce.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It depends on who you're speaking to and who you're staying silent in front of.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He's looking back on the days when you took risks.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It also looks at the days when you don\u2019t take any risks.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And finally, he passes his own judgment.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Maybe that's why they're angry.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because for years they believed they were the conscience of society.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But society is telling them something else:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cConscience is not a matter of claim, but of sacrifice.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRepresentation isn\u2019t achieved simply by declaring oneself a representative.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSpeaking on behalf of the people does not mean standing above them.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What is crumbling today is not just the reputation of a few artists.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What is crumbling is a mindset that believes itself to be beyond question.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just a few careers that are crumbling.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

What is crumbling is the moral guardianship that was established over the years under the guise of cultural superiority.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And that is why what is happening is not a debate about art, but a debate about legitimacy.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

For the first time, a society is asking itself this question:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor years, you\u2019ve been telling us what to think\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201dSo what have you left behind in this country?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

How many lasting works?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

An institutional legacy that has touched the lives of how many generations?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Because at the end of the day, people remember the results, not the songs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is not the applause but the works that are remembered.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He remembers the traces, not the slogans.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

And as history delivers its final verdict, it poses a single question from which no one can escape:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou spoke on behalf of the people\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201dSo what have you done for the people?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
