There are some words that aren\u2019t just read\u2014they cut deep.
\nAnd there are some words that take on new meaning with every child\u2019s death.
\nJust like these lines by Aziz Nesin:<\/p>\n
\u201cIf only I could die that way\u201d
\nIf only I could die like that, kids
\n\u201dMay you never have to face death\"<\/p>\n
But it's not working.
\nNone of us took responsibility for that death.
\nNone of us really carried that burden.<\/p>\n
A child who entered the gate of a school in \u015eanl\u0131urfa,
\nHe finds fear, not a lesson.
\nA classroom in Kahramanmara\u015f,
\nIt\u2019s no longer just a place where education is provided\u2014
\na place of loss, a place of belated conscience.<\/p>\n
And we\u2019re still saying \u201cwe\u2019re sorry.\u201d.<\/p>\n
What does being sad change?
\nWhich child is he bringing back?
\nWhich unfinished notebook is he finishing?<\/p>\n
A child dies while working\u2014
\nbecause \u201che has to.\u201d.
\nA child is dying in the hospital\u2014
\nbecause of \u201cnegligence\u201d.
\nA child is dying at school\u2014
\nbecause \u201cthere are no precautions.\u201d.<\/p>\n
And then everyone says the same thing:
\n\u201cIt\u2019s so painful.\u201d
\n\u201cOur condolences.\u201d<\/p>\n
Is it enough?<\/p>\n
It is not enough.<\/p>\n
Because this is no longer just pain,
\nThis is a clear cause for anger.
\nThis is a darkness that is clearly looming.<\/p>\n
Imagine a country:
\nChildren are dying while working,
\nor in a place that needs to be protected,
\nor in the hands of those believed to protect it.<\/p>\n
And yet we are still able to remain silent.<\/p>\n
Perhaps the real problem isn\u2019t death\u2014
\nThe real problem is that these deaths have become routine.
\nOne more piece of news,
\none more name,
\nAnother life that\u2019s talked about for a few days and then forgotten\u2026<\/p>\n
No, no, no.
\nThis is not something to be forgotten.<\/p>\n
The death of a child cannot be \u201cnews.\u201d.
\nThe death of a child cannot be \u201cfate.\u201d.
\nThe death of a child can never be \u201csomething one gets used to.\u201d.<\/p>\n
Those words by Aziz Nesin
\nIt\u2019s not like a wish anymore\u2014
\nIt stands before us like a source of shame.<\/p>\n
Because death still looms over children.
\nAnd then some.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s why this piece isn\u2019t just an elegy.
\nThis is an objection.
\nThis is a rejection.<\/p>\n
Because if there\u2019s still a shred of humanity left in us,
\nWe have to say this:<\/p>\n
If one more child goes missing
\nThis isn't just a loss,
\nIt is a crime that has been laid at all of our feet.<\/p>\n
And none of us
