The fact that children, who are the most sensitive and most vulnerable segment of a society, turn to crime is actually a reflection of the conditions produced by the adult world. For this reason, the problem should be addressed not only with the question “why do children turn to crime?”, but also with the question “what kind of a world have we built so that children come into contact with crime in this world?”.

Focusing on a single cause is not the right approach to understanding juvenile delinquency today. This situation is the result of multi-layered factors that feed each other. From peer bullying to digital addiction, from the transformation in the family structure to the education system, a wide range of areas shape the behavioral world of children.

First of all, peer bullying constitutes an important threshold for children to turn to crime. A child who is excluded, humiliated or systematically bullied in the school environment either withdraws and ignores himself/herself or develops aggressive behaviors with the desire to gain power over time. At this point, crime often becomes a means of revenge or a means of proving one's existence. Not only the victim but also the perpetrator of bullying is at risk, because violence is a learned behavior and often becomes permanent with impunity.

Digital addiction is one of the most defining factors of our age. Children are growing up not only in the physical world, but also in a digital universe driven by algorithms. The content they are exposed to in this universe is often uncontrolled and unfiltered. Games that normalize violence, TV series that heroize criminals and content that glorifies instant gratification can distort children's perception of reality. More importantly, some digital platforms have an algorithmic structure that unknowingly directs children to more extreme content. This creates a desensitization against crime in the child's mental world.

The transformation in the family structure is also at the center of this process. Fragmented families, parents' busy work schedules, the isolation of nuclear families and the weakening of extended family ties create serious gaps in children's emotional development. For children, the family is not only a place of shelter, but also a school where values, boundaries and responsibility are learned. However, it is a fact that some approaches increase the problem. Especially in families with high levels of knowledge and economic status, it is a problem in itself that the child's material needs are met in excess, but emotional needs are not met. Another problem is that children are taught their rights in an exaggerated manner, while their responsibilities are not mentioned at all.

Today, many children try to meet their emotional needs through digital tools or peer groups. Perhaps one of the most critical breaking points is when parents do not spend time with their children. This leads children to develop false reference points. . Because when a child grows up in a world that does not understand, listen to and guide them, they often try to find their own path through wrong experiences. For a child growing up without guidance, crime is sometimes a discovery, sometimes an escape, sometimes a search for identity.

The influence of media and popular culture cannot be ignored. Movies and TV series with criminal elements have a strong impact especially on children and adolescents. In these productions, the consequences of crime are often romanticized and characters who commit crimes are presented as charismatic and powerful figures. This creates a dangerous model in the minds of children whose value judgments are not yet fully established. We should also keep in mind that this structure, which is gradually realized over a period of time, is especially ensured by certain dominant forces.

The erosion of values is one of the most profound dimensions of this process. The widespread social focus on speed, pleasure and success has pushed values such as patience, labor, solidarity and responsibility to the background. Children now pursue the question of “how to win fast” rather than “how to be a good person”. This mental transformation may pave the way for the legitimization of crime.

The structure of the education system is one of the factors that feed this picture. In a system where children and even families compete and competition is at the center, people start to see the person next to them not as a friend, but as a rival or even an enemy. On the other hand, in an educational approach where arts and sports are pushed to the background, the emotional and social development of children is neglected. Art enables children to express themselves, while sports help them learn discipline and team spirit. The lack of these areas causes children to be unable to channel their energy into healthy channels. The relationship with parents, who have little contact with the child due to the intensity of their work, is further reduced due to homework.

Inadequate punishment methods and weakened trust in the justice system are also important factors. When children are not confronted with the consequences of their behavior, their perception of boundaries does not develop. However, it should be noted that punishment alone is not the solution. The real problem is the development of restorative and educational approaches that give the child a sense of responsibility. For crimes committed under 18 years of age, the responsibility of the elders of the family must be considered. It is another fact that in some families, the fact that the crime is not punished adequately due to age is an incentive

Beyond these, factors such as economic inequalities, social disconnections caused by urbanization, migration and adaptation problems, and easier access to substance abuse are among the important factors that increase juvenile delinquency. Especially for children growing up in disadvantaged areas, crime sometimes emerges as a necessity and sometimes as a survival strategy.

When all these reasons come together, the picture that emerges is this: Juvenile delinquency is not an individual deviation but a systemic problem. Therefore, the solution must be multidimensional. A simultaneous transformation is required in a wide range of areas from family to education, from media to law.

First of all, the family structure needs to be strengthened, parents need to be raised in awareness and quality time with children should be encouraged. Arts, sports and values education should be re-centered in the education system. Effective programs against peer bullying should be implemented in schools and environments where children feel safe should be created.

In the digital world, content moderation and digital literacy are of great importance. Children should not only use technology, but also be able to evaluate it correctly. The media should act responsibly and avoid content that normalizes violence and crime.

In summary, the justice system for children should be restorative and educational rather than punitive. Because the aim is not to suppress crime, but to prevent crime from occurring.

It should not be forgotten that children are the mirror of the world in which they grow up. If there is a dark image in that mirror, the responsibility should be sought not only in what is reflected in that mirror, but also in the hands holding the mirror. In a rapidly changing world where digital technology is becoming increasingly dominant, the mental and emotional health of today's children is of utmost importance. The search for measures only for the results with the government, opposition and NGOs reveals our political mistake of today. The solution lies in evaluating the multi-parameter structure in all its dimensions and acting together with the whole society. The increase in juvenile crimes shows us not only a problem but also a warning: We have to rebuild the present in order not to lose the future.

The justice system for juveniles should be restorative and educational rather than punitive.
