It is the fundamental task of today that the working class becomes the leading force of a revolutionary and republican challenge to capitalist exploitation and imperialist barbarism.

May 1 is doomed to become meaningless unless it is a day when the working people show will, multiply energy and hope, and organize in line with this task.

Unfortunately, May Day in Turkey is in danger of becoming meaningless.

We do not intend to ignore the efforts of the trade union confederations to celebrate May Day for many years, nor do we intend to do injustice to their determination in the face of government pressure. However, the attitudes and behaviors that overshadowed this effort and struggle have unfortunately become permanent over the years, and the independent ideological and political identity of the working class, which should be decisive on May Day, has become obscured.

No one can interfere with the political preferences of confederation or affiliated union administrations. However, those who have the will to organize a united and inclusive May Day must prepare a content in accordance with the universal principles of May Day and stand at an equal distance to participating organizations. Despite all our calls, statements and meetings, the fact that CHP and sometimes DEM politicians are given space as speakers at May Day rallies, and that in some cities rally organizers use CHP election buses as platforms and propaganda tools is not a product of simple carelessness, but is related to the situation the trade union movement in Turkey has fallen into. It should be clear that the Communist Party of Turkey is not disturbed by the CHP's participation in May Day rallies. On the contrary, our party wishes the CHP to participate in May Day with a larger mass. However, on the day of struggle of the working class, which the TKP is a part of with great seriousness, determination and high participation, for whatever reason, it does not have to listen to politicians who have no problem with the capitalist exploitation order and imperialism, or watch their stage shows. Another consequence of making May Day dependent on the agendas of the establishment parties that have nothing to do with the interests of the working class is the devaluation of the historical relationship between Taksim Square and May Day. Taksim is the area where May Day was first massively and centrally celebrated in Turkey. Hundreds of thousands of laborers gathered in this area, voicing the demands of the working class and renewing hope with halays and folk songs. The strong will of the workers who gathered from Diyarbakır, Çukurova, Trabzon, Izmir and Ankara, risking hours of travel, was bloodied a year later by the bourgeoisie's treacherous provocation, and the workers responded to this massacre by flocking to Taksim in 1978 with even greater determination and for a united May Day. During the periods of banning and repression that followed, Taksim naturally turned into a site of struggle. While our party has been a part of the struggle for years to open Taksim to the working class as the May Day Square, it has shown several times that the prohibitionist attitude of the governments can be overcome with an organized will.

On the other hand, the reduction of May Day to a field dispute is exactly what the powers that be want. May Day should be a day when the working class gathers energy, multiplies, reassures itself and when other segments of society once again see the reality of the working class. The decontextualization of the Taksim agenda and its gradual transformation into the “image-making” of some popular figures does not strengthen the spirit of unity, struggle and solidarity of the working class. The “Taksim determination” that is put forward every year and then not given its due loses its credibility after a certain point, and more importantly, it devalues the actions and events organized in other areas in advance. The systematic pressure on the government to open Taksim Square to the working class is as important as the political and social weight of the working class, which cannot be opposed to this demand. In the 1970s, Taksim Square was the May Day Square of Turkey, not of Istanbul. The abandonment of this approach today should be explained not by ’technical“ difficulties but by political and ideological decline. In this sense, our priority on May Day must be to ensure the emergence of a united and independent force representing the interests of the working class. Only as a result of this effort will it be possible to regain Taksim in such a way that it will never again be closed to the working class by capital.Such a unity cannot be achieved through protocol statements, by declaring ”we are in Taksim, our call to everyone“ and then, shortly before May Day, by showing another area as a rally address.May Day should be a day when the word and action of the working class gives hope to the whole society except the exploiting classes. All TKP's efforts are in this direction. There should be no doubt that our party will seek ways to contribute to the organization, political and social power of the working class in the coming years, for united and inclusive May Day rallies that will contribute to the organization of the working class, get rid of the shadow of the establishment parties and stand behind the decisions taken.

In 2026, TKP takes responsibility to ensure that the revolutionary, patriotic, republican accumulation of Turkey and most importantly the leading sections of the working class do not stand down on May Day, but on the contrary, continue the struggle with greater hope and determination immediately after May Day.
