{"id":284822,"date":"2026-04-07T22:54:47","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T22:54:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/halkweb.com.tr\/?p=284822"},"modified":"2026-04-07T22:54:47","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T22:54:47","slug":"domination-over-bread-political-architecture-of-poverty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/halkweb.com.tr\/en\/domination-over-bread-political-architecture-of-poverty\/","title":{"rendered":"Domination over Bread: The Political Architecture of Poverty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>No economic data in Turkey is innocent anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Numbers don't just measure; they also conceal.<br \/>\nAnd sometimes the biggest lie of all is that the correct figures are presented in the wrong context.<\/p>\n<p>Today, when you say \u201cbread is 17.5 liras\u201d, you are told that this is related to inflation, costs, global developments.<br \/>\nBut the reality is this:<\/p>\n<p>The price of bread in this country is not an economic outcome,<br \/>\n<strong>is the clearest indication of a political choice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because bread is not just a food in Turkey.<br \/>\nBread is the measure of class.<br \/>\nBread is the litmus test of who the state serves.<\/p>\n<p>And today that litmus shows something very clear:<br \/>\n<strong>This system does not increase the people's table, but the coffers of capital.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>BUDGET: NOT A TECHNICAL BUT AN IDEOLOGICAL TEXT<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Politics is often complex because complexity diffuses responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>But the budget is not like that.<\/p>\n<p>The budget is the most honest text of a country.<br \/>\nBecause it cannot be hidden.<\/p>\n<p>Money paid to interest in the first two months of 2026: <strong>640.1 billion TL.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To read this figure as technical data is to miss the point.<\/p>\n<p>This is a record of a direct preference.<\/p>\n<p>Because it's the same budget:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Almost abandon agriculture<\/li>\n<li>Symbolicizes education<\/li>\n<li>Reduces health to a secondary item<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>but when it comes to interest,<br \/>\n<strong>does not think of any savings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here the argument of \u201ceconomic necessity\u201d collapses.<\/p>\n<p>Because necessity exists where there is no alternative.<br \/>\nBut here there is an alternative - but it is not preferred.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>BREAD AN INDICATOR OF JUSTICE, NOT ECONOMY<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>200 grams of bread is 17.5 lira.<\/p>\n<p>To trivialize this sentence is the biggest mistake of this country.<\/p>\n<p>Because it is not just a price increase.<\/p>\n<p>This means the following:<\/p>\n<p>The staple food of a society,<br \/>\nit becomes inaccessible to the most vulnerable sections of society.<\/p>\n<p>Loss of minimum wage earners: <strong>468 loaves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is not a statistic.<br \/>\nThis is a direct cut from life.<\/p>\n<p>In modern economies, poverty is often invisible.<br \/>\nBut poverty in Turkey is still primitive:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Over bread.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And this shows how deep the issue is.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TAX REGIME: NOT COINCIDENCE, DESIGN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Official data reveal a simple truth:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Income tax: <strong>558.5 billion TL<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Corporate tax: <strong>390 billion TL<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It means this:<\/p>\n<p>The state taxes labor more,<br \/>\nand it protects capital more.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a mistake.<br \/>\nIt is a choice.<\/p>\n<p>And this choice reshapes society from top to bottom.<\/p>\n<p>If the issue is really to be resolved, then the actions to be taken are clear:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Interest rate priority must be broken<\/strong><br \/>\nInterest payments in the budget should be gradually reduced and public resources should be directed to production and basic needs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Subsidize bread and basic food<\/strong><br \/>\nBasic products like bread are not left to the mercy of the market. The state intervenes directly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Reverse the tax system<\/strong><br \/>\nMore taxes should be levied on high profits and wealth, not on salaries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Agriculture should be declared a strategic sector again<\/strong><br \/>\nA model that supports domestic production, not imports, should be established.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Make transparent budgeting mandatory<\/strong><br \/>\nThe public should be able to clearly monitor how much is spent on which item.<\/p>\n<p>In the first chapter we made it clear that this picture is not a coincidence, but a choice.<\/p>\n<p>Now we need to see how that preference has turned into a system.<\/p>\n<p>Because it's not just about bread anymore.<br \/>\nThe issue is how this country is governed.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>FINANCIALIZATION: AN ECONOMY DISCONNECTED FROM PRODUCTION<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For a long time, the Turkish economy has been growing on the basis of finance, not production.<\/p>\n<p>What does that mean?<\/p>\n<p>It means:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money movement, not factories, is growing<\/li>\n<li>The cycle of debt, not production, is expanding<\/li>\n<li>Financial instruments, not labor, gain value<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Paying 640 billion TL to interest is not a stand-alone data.<br \/>\nThis is a declaration of where the center of the economy is.<\/p>\n<p>And that's the nature of the model:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Large sectors of society lose all the time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because in a financialized economy, the winners are limited,<br \/>\nThe losers are the majority.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>DEBT AND DEPENDENCY: NEW AUDIT TOOL<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the past, poverty was just an outcome.<br \/>\nToday it has become a tool.<\/p>\n<p>How?<\/p>\n<p>On debt.<\/p>\n<p>People can no longer just get by -<br \/>\n<strong>living in debt.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Credit cards, personal loans, deferred payments...<\/p>\n<p>This mechanism produces this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A constant state of fragility<\/li>\n<li>A constant addiction<\/li>\n<li>Perpetual silence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because a society in debt finds it difficult to object.<\/p>\n<p>So what is happening today is not only economic,<br \/>\nat the same time <strong>is a political control mechanism.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>NORMALIZATION OF POVERTY: THE MOST DANGEROUS THRESHOLD<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The collapse of a society does not happen suddenly.<br \/>\nIt takes getting used to.<\/p>\n<p>The most dangerous thing in Turkey today is this:<\/p>\n<p>People are no longer surprised.<\/p>\n<p>Bread hike has become an ordinary news item.<br \/>\nThe cost of living has become everyday.<\/p>\n<p>This is not an economic situation-<br \/>\n<strong>is a mental break.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because what people get used to,<br \/>\nshe'll settle for him.<\/p>\n<p>And the poverty that is accepted,<br \/>\nit becomes permanent.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>POLITICAL RESPONSIBILITY: THIS MODEL HAS AN OWNER<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Anonymizing this picture does not absolve responsibility.<\/p>\n<p>It is a system.<br \/>\nAnd every system has a founder and a practitioner.<\/p>\n<p>This is the economic model,<br \/>\nIt was shaped under the leadership of Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan.<\/p>\n<p>These are budget preferences,<br \/>\nIt is implemented by the Ministry of Treasury and Finance.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, there is no spontaneous crisis.<\/p>\n<p>There is a direction in the middle:<\/p>\n<p><strong>A direction that pushes labor to the background and puts interest at the center.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>IF BREAD IS SHRINKING, IT IS A SYSTEM PROBLEM<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What is happening in Turkey today is not a \u201ctemporary crisis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>This is the natural consequence of a particular economic model.<\/p>\n<p>If you do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bread is shrinking<\/li>\n<li>Salary is melting<\/li>\n<li>If the tax burden falls on the bottom<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>the problem there is not technical, but structural.<\/p>\n<p>And structural problems cannot be solved with makeup.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A REAL CHANGE OF DIRECTION <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Without changing this order, the result will not change. For this:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Shift to a production-centered economic model<\/strong><br \/>\nIndustry and agriculture must become the backbone of the economy again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Limit financialization<\/strong><br \/>\nThe real economy should be supported instead of a structure that grows on interest and debt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Reduce debt dependency<\/strong><br \/>\nIncome-increasing and debt-relief policies should be implemented for households.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. The welfare state must be rebuilt<\/strong><br \/>\nEducation, health and food should be publicly guaranteed, not marketized.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.
