Turkey is once again on the brink of a debate: the Ministry of Women and Gender Equality. Is it reasonable, unnecessary, or just political rhetoric?<\/p>\n
The Constitution declares everyone to be equal citizens; it makes no distinction between women and men, young and old, or LGBT+ individuals. Equality exists in theory, but in practice, rights are scattered across different ministries. Social assistance falls under the Ministry of Family, equality in the workplace under the Ministry of Labor, and legal protection under the Ministry of Justice\u2026 resulting in a chaotic situation lacking coordination.<\/p>\n
\u00d6zel\u2019s proposal sounds reasonable: establishing a central focus on women\u2019s and gender equality issues, strengthening efforts to combat violence and discrimination, and ensuring compliance with international standards.<\/p>\n
But today, Turkey is grappling with an economic crisis, inflation, and challenges in education and energy. The real issue here is this: Establishing a new ministry could create an unnecessary bureaucratic burden and cost. On the other hand, if the ministry remains merely a name change, it is unlikely to make a meaningful difference in practice.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, while the ministry can serve as a facilitating and centralizing tool, it is not the only way to make equality visible in practice. There are other ways to make equal citizenship visible on the ground:<\/p>\n
* Departments focused on women and equality could be established within existing ministries.
\n* Strategic action plans and policies can be implemented at the national level.
\n* Independent equality commissions could be established at the level of the Grand National Assembly or the Prime Minister\u2019s Office.
\n* Awareness campaigns can be carried out through collaboration between civil society and the media, and transparent reporting based on data can be provided.<\/p>\n
In short, the new ministry could theoretically make a difference, but its credibility and effectiveness will depend on concrete policies that make equal citizenship a reality in practice. Simply changing the name or establishing a new structure may not bring about real change on the ground.<\/p>\n
The real question is: Which issues are a priority for Turkey today? Women\u2019s rights and gender equality are certainly important, but are they urgent, or merely a luxury? Rights are equal in theory, but there are still shortcomings in practice.
