Politics in Turkey is no longer a matter of consistency, but an art of timing.
\nKnowing when to be hard and when to be soft... Even doing both on the same day if possible.<\/p>\n
In the morning, Devlet Bah\u00e7eli came out and criticized \u00d6zg\u00fcr \u00d6zel.
\nNot just like that; expressions that have long passed the limit of political criticism and turned into direct personality analysis...
\n\u201cEclipse of reason\u201d, \u201cpathological case\u201d, \u201cdisgrace\u201d... The list goes on and on.<\/p>\n
Then it's evening.
\nLater on the same day, on the same political stage, this time with a completely different tone:
\n\u201cMay your Kandil be blessed, let's be united, let's strengthen our brotherhood...\u201d<\/p>\n
You can't help but think:
\nWas the daytime message from another country, or was the evening message sent to another planet?<\/p>\n
This is no longer a classic political contradiction.
\nThis is the same character appearing in two different roles on the same day.
\nOn the one hand, a language that feeds on harshness and seeks to discredit others;
\nOn the other hand, a discourse that reminds us of social peace, unity and solidarity.<\/p>\n
The problem is that these two languages no longer neutralize each other.
\nOn the contrary, the more they are juxtaposed, the more visible they become.<\/p>\n
Because the call for unity looks like a \u201cgoodwill polish\u201d sprinkled over the divisive language used throughout the day.
\nAnd what emerges from under the polish is the familiar picture that everyone sees but no one is surprised by:
\nToughness is at a premium, softness is an obligatory announcement at the end of the day.<\/p>\n
Perhaps the real issue is not what politicians say.
\nThe point is that these two contrasting languages no longer seem strange to anyone.<\/p>\n
Because politics in Turkey has long turned into this:
\nFirst break it, then say \u201clet's not break it\u201d.
\nFirst get tough, then call for \u201cunity\u201d.<\/p>\n
And most importantly:
\nKnow that no one is really going to ask, \u201cHow is this happening?\u201d.<\/p>\n
That is exactly the point.
\nThis is no longer an inconsistency;
