However, the secret to this success lies in the nature of the legacy Turkey inherited and in the way the people themselves shaped that legacy.

The Soviet Legacy and the Ruins of Anatolia

The Soviet Union had inherited a vast intellectual legacy from Tsarist Russia in 1917. An intellectual class that had been Westernized since the time of Peter the Great—ranging from Dostoevsky to Tolstoy—already existed. In contrast, Mustafa Kemal; the remnants of the empire, the literacy rate %10’un It had to create a “new nation” from the war-torn ruins beneath it, where the social fabric had been shattered. While the Soviets forced this ready-made capital into an ideological straitjacket, Kemalism—in the spirit of the Village Institutes—combined education with production and democratic consciousness. The goal of transforming the peasant not merely into a literate person but into a rational agent has formed the enlightenment vein that has kept Turkey standing even under the most difficult conditions today.

Total Resistance Against Imperialism and the Founding Will

The greatest strength of Kemalism lies in the fact that it crowned the struggle for independence and sovereignty not merely with a change of power within the palace, but with an all-out national victory against imperialism. Unlike secularization efforts in neighboring regions, this revolution was not a gift but the collective achievement of the entire people.

While secularism in Syria and Iraq remained a tool of power for a minority (Ba’athism), in Iran, the Pahlavi monarchy’s conception as a “palace project” backed by foreign support led to social alienation. In Turkey, however, Kemalism was won against imperialism together with every member of the people—from the woman pulling the cart to the soldier on the front lines, and the civilian will embodied in the Müdafaa-i Hukuk societies. In this regard, the true founder of Kemalism is the civil will of Anatolia. The fact that the people continue to stand up for the Republic even today, despite those in power, stems from the fact that this revolution was not a “top-down” project, but rather a “founding consensus” that the people won with their own blood.

The Fallacy of Militarism and Its Scientific Basis

Those who equate Kemalism with militarism have always failed to grasp the distinction between the revolution’s defensive reflex and its vision for the future. While militarism glorifies power, Kemalism has placed the military under civilian control and, declaring that “Science is the truest guide in life,” has chosen science as its guide. This scientific foundation—which took sovereignty away from the palace and transferred it directly to the people—is the true source of strength that has made Turkey immune to foreign intervention and internal political upheavals.

March 13, 2026: Global Registration and a Note for the History Books

To understand just how successful this revolution was, the Atatürk International Peace Award ceremony held on March 13, 2026, marks a historic turning point.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres affirmed the global scope of this vision at the ceremony with the following words:

“Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s principle of ‘Peace at home, peace in the world’ is the purest crystallization of the United Nations” founding philosophy and ideal of peace. Today, the world needs this rational and inclusive language of peace more than ever.”

At the same ceremony, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan personally described the level of “national reason” that Kemalist foreign policy had reached a century later with the following words:

“Gazi Mustafa Kemal’s philosophy of ‘Peace at home, peace in the world’ is not merely an aspiration of our foreign policy today, but its unchanging backbone. By acting in accordance with this time-honored principle in its region, which is surrounded by conflict, Turkey will continue to be the sole guarantor of peace, stability, and justice.”

Conclusion

As the Soviet experiment shook and collapsed under the weight of its ideological straitjacket, A century later, the Kemalist Enlightenment successfully secured its place in the future through the rational individuals it forged from a fragmented society. It is no coincidence that Turkey is today an island of stability in the region; this is the victory of that unique struggle waged by the entire people against imperialism and of an unshakable social foundation rooted in science.

Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due: How Great You Are, Atatürk!

Today, on March 13, 2026, as the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the President of the Republic of Turkey stand together at the same podium to honor that great principle you established a century ago—’Peace at home, peace in the world“— this is not merely a historical commemoration. It is the absolute victory of reason and science over time.

While we are surrounded on all sides by a ring of fire, and neighboring regions are reeling from identity crises, we are grateful to you for bequeathing to us secularism, science, and national sovereignty as a way of life. This people, whom you rescued from the darkness of palaces and led into the light of science, Despite all the sieges, it continues to breathe in your footsteps.

If, a century later, the compass of world peace still points to your vision, there is only one sentence left to say:

How great you are Atatürk!

The Soviet Union collapsed, and the Middle East’s attempts at secularism fell, one by one, into the spiral of “failed states.” However, the Kemalist Enlightenment—built entirely by the people in opposition to imperialism—is now, a century later, being recognized from the podiums of the United Nations as the sole recipe for world peace.
