{"id":282114,"date":"2026-01-29T21:48:15","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T21:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/halkweb.com.tr\/?p=282114"},"modified":"2026-01-31T06:11:03","modified_gmt":"2026-01-31T06:11:03","slug":"a-love-a-name-a-name-a-reckoning-ahtamar-in-van-golun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/halkweb.com.tr\/en\/a-love-a-name-a-name-a-reckoning-ahtamar-in-van-golun\/","title":{"rendered":"A Love, a Name, a Reckoning on Lake Van: Ahtamar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some poems are not aesthetic, they are testimonies.<br \/>\nHovhannes Tumanyan's Akhtamar is exactly such a poem.<br \/>\nIt reads like a love story, but it is actually a social cause.<\/p>\n<p>Lake Van is not a romantic setting here; it is a memory that keeps secrets, suffocates secrets, carries secrets.<br \/>\nSwimming from the shore to the island, the young man defies not only Tamar but also prohibitions, fears and gossip.<\/p>\n<p>Tamar's fire is innocent.<br \/>\nBut in this geography, innocence is often criminalized.<br \/>\nAnd someone always comes along,<br \/>\n<strong>\u201cmorality\u201d<\/strong> in his name.<\/p>\n<p>This is where Tumanyan's real courage lies:<br \/>\nHe doesn't look for the culprit in the sea.<br \/>\nHe blames neither the waves, nor the storm, nor the darkness.<br \/>\nIt points to the human being.<br \/>\nThe jealous, the spying, the one who thinks gossip is a virtue...<\/p>\n<p>Young man drowns in the sea,<br \/>\nsociety breathes a sigh of relief on the shore.<br \/>\nBecause the order is intact.<br \/>\nLove is dead, norms are alive.<\/p>\n<p>In the morning, Lake Van brings a dead body.<br \/>\nThe one that stays on the lips <strong>\u201cAh! Tamar!\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nnot a whisper of love,<br \/>\nis an overdue objection.<\/p>\n<p>And the island is known as Akdamar Island today.<br \/>\nIn other words, even the stone, the water, the island has a name in this land;<br \/>\nbut there is no accounting for drowned loves.<\/p>\n<p>In this geography, even if love knows how to swim, society knows how to drown.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Armenian poet and writer Hovhannes Tumanyan's poem \u201cAhtamar\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Of the happy and smiling Lake Van<\/em><br \/>\n<em>From the small coastal village<\/em><br \/>\n<em>He enters the water<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Every night, a nephew enters the water without a boat,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>He relies on his biceps,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Swim through the water<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Across the island. From the dimly lit island, it's quiet.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>There is a light calling,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I'm the one who shines for him<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A sign that never stops. Beautiful Tamar nights<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That's how he makes fire,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And waiting impatiently<\/em><br \/>\n<em>There, quietly, secretly. The sea doesn't stop, it churns,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The young man's heart flutters,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Its waves roar with enthusiasm<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And Tamar swims without fear.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>He waits for her on the shore,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The sound of water in every stroke<\/em><br \/>\n<em>His body trembles. He's silent on the dark shore.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Here's a dark shadow,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes, that's him...They met<\/em><br \/>\n<em>In the night full of doubt. The waves of Lake Van<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The only caressing shore,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Leaving the island<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Whispering and mysteriously...While they make love<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Under the firmament,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Gossip is on the waves,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>To Tamar, the vile, depraved Tamar, and in the young girl's heart<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The fluttering of love,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>When the young man fights,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>With the raging, angry sea.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>They learned their secrets,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>And on a dark night<\/em><br \/>\n<em>They extinguished the torch. It disappeared into the endless waters.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Confused, brave young lover,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>There is only one sound in the winds:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Moans: \u201dAh! Tamar! ... \u201dVoices on the wild rocks<\/em><br \/>\n<em>It echoes and echoes,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The sea roars and foams,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Kah whistles a deep whistle<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Sometimes she moans: \u201dAh! Tamar! ... \u201dIn the morning, the sea is tired<\/em><br \/>\n<em>He brought a corpse,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>On your lip, quivering, dull,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Two words:<\/em><br \/>\n<em>As if at the time of death<\/em><br \/>\n<em>She murmured: \u201dAh!
