When I look at the Eastern Mediterranean, I do not feel comfortable.<\/p>\n
And when I look at Cyprus.<\/p>\n
Because what is happening is not spoken out loud, but it is happening step by step.<\/p>\n
That's the most dangerous thing. The risk grows when there is no noise.
\nThe steps taken by Israel, the US and Greece in the Eastern Mediterranean in recent years may seem \u201cnormal\u201d when viewed individually. An exercise, a defense agreement, an energy negotiation... But when they are put side by side, a different picture emerges.<\/p>\n
Cyprus is being placed at the center of security plans, away from being a place to talk about a solution.
\nFor Israel, it is not just about gas.
\nGas safety.
\nThat security is ensured through military cooperation. Rapprochement with Southern Cyprus, use of airspace, defense systems, joint exercises... These are not temporary steps. Moreover, this relationship is no longer new. The leaders of Israel, Greece and Cyprus met for the 10th time.<\/p>\n
Ten meetings is not an experiment, not a coincidence, not just diplomatic courtesy. This is a continuous line. The topics of energy, defense and security become more intertwined with each meeting.
\nThe US stands behind this order.
\nGreece is part of this line.<\/p>\n
My main concern is that this picture does not bring peace in Cyprus any closer. On the contrary, it is locking the island even more. Turkish Cypriots are left out of this equation.<\/p>\n
The security of those not at the table is left to the priorities of others. This is never a safe situation.<\/p>\n
Turkey's presence on the island is a stabilizing factor, I do not deny that, but it also puts Cyprus in the shadow of every regional tension in which Turkey is involved.<\/p>\n
So the island sometimes becomes risky not because of its own problems, but because of other people's accounts.
\nWhat worries me is that this militarization is now considered normal. Exercises are becoming commonplace, bases are not discussed, armament is considered \u201cnormal\u201d. Yet history has shown us time and again: Armament does not preserve peace. It only postpones the crisis. And when the crisis is postponed, it comes harder.
\nCyprus is not a discredited file.<\/p>\n
Rather, it is a file that is quietly being reshaped.
\nAnd this silence does not reassure me. Because the biggest fractures happen when no one speaks out loud.
\nI am not interested in spreading fear. But I cannot ignore this: If Cyprus is completely detached from the grounds of equality and solution and turns into an island of security blocs, the peoples will pay the price. And that price is not worth any energy line or military plan.
