\nA march of shared dreams, shared pain, shared recitals...<\/p>\n
Sometimes they were the *\u201cBoran Storm \u201d* in the workers' struggle for their rights,
\nSometimes they stood firm like \u201cCemo\u201d on the peasant's land.
\nAt the university gates, next to students who were denied entry because of their headscarves
\n\u201cWe are right and we will win\u201d they shouted.
\nThey were the voices of those who were willing to die for their art;
\n\u201cHe is not one of those who say \u201dI die for Turkey\",
\nThey were among those who could not be silenced even by dying.<\/p>\n
No one could silence that voice.
\nBecause Grup Yorum is not a band; it is the continuation of a tradition that comes from the bosom of the people.<\/p>\n

Late 80s, early 90s...
\nBlack apron, white collar years.
\nThe school roads were muddy, shoes had holes, coats were patched.
\nPencils used to break;
\nbut it was not our poverty that was broken.
\nHe was heavier than lead.
\nIt was unbreakable.<\/p>\n
I remember...<\/p>\n
As \u201cWe Didn't Surrender\u201d spins on the cassette player
\nWe were the children who had bagel money stuck in their pockets, not every day, but once in a while.
\nOr rather, I saved up those pocket money
\nWe were a generation trying to buy a Grup Yorum cassette.<\/p>\n
It's a story...
\nIt is a story that has happened in many homes.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen \u201dthat month\" came, the school would change.
\nSales of bagels in the canteen would drop, toast wouldn't sell anyway.
\nAt the grocery store across the street
\nthe tomato paste on the toast would form a crust.<\/p>\n

\nhe would sneak his allowance into his secret stash.
\nBut it was not enough.
\nIt was never enough.<\/p>\n
Other ways had to be found.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat month\u201d a guest had to come to the house urgently.
\nMom calls from the kitchen,
\nfrom that money traffic in the kitchen
\nwe had to take our share.<\/p>\n
\u201cGo to the grocery store, buy two kilos of oranges, one kilo of apples...\u201d
\n\u201cDon't ring the bell, leave the door open...\u201d<\/p>\n
But that's life...
\nThe visiting aunt was experienced.
\nHe bursts into the kitchen on his way out the door:
\n\u201cFor God's sake, don't bother, where is he going?\u201d<\/p>\n
But in vain.
\nWe went out through that door.
\nBecause they needed money \u201cthat month\u201d.
\nBecause \u201cCemo's footsteps\u201d were coming.<\/p>\n
Classic fight on the way back from the grocery store:

\nBegging and pleading, the change would be transferred to the stash.<\/p>\n
Bagel money + grocery store change...
\nWe were managing.
\nBut it was still not enough.<\/p>\n
Because \u201cthat month\u201d had come.
\nThere was a cassette of Grup Yorum.<\/p>\n
It would not be without labor.
\nIt required patience for days, weeks.
\nBecause these tapes were not just music;
\n*It was *\u201cMagic\u201d, it was *\u201cWalking\u201d,
\n*It was *\u201cRebellion\u201d, it was *\u201cResistance\u201d.<\/p>\n
At the rallies, there were many who cheered \u201cOur Revolutionary March Continues\u201d,
\nbut when it comes to paying the price

\nThere was a lot of suffering.<\/p>\n
There was only one reason:
\nIt's a cassette of Grup Yorum.<\/p>\n
That tape was not bought once in a while.

That sentence of my mother's when I entered the house:
\n\u201cHuh, is your stomachache gone?\u201d<\/p>\n
Yes, mom.
\nPassed.<\/p>\n
Because that stomach ache of ours made us good people who did not run away from *\u201cFight Necessarily \u201d*, who did not give up saying \u201cWe are right and we will win\u201d.<\/p>\n
