Individuality means the extent to which one can act freely and uniquely in relations with others. Of course, individualization takes time.
In fact, the individuality of individuals begins with their conception in the womb.
According to Erikson, especially the first 5 years and adolescence have a place and importance in the development of the self and indirectly individuality.
As it is known, the foundation of individuality starts with the establishment of a sense of trust. In order to meet this understanding, the child's basic needs must be met in the early years. However, our economic problems prevent this understanding. .
Allowing the child to act autonomously and independently by the parents is one of the reasons that lead to the child's individuality. However, since the level of education of parents in our country is not at the desired level, these two important factors are ignored.
Again, the place and importance of adolescence in the acquisition of individuality cannot be disputed. In this period, young people want to experience their feelings and behaviors. Parents and educators have to support these initiatives of young people.
On the other hand, it is necessary to mention the consequences of the lack of individuality.
If people do not experience their individuality, they are likely to encounter some negativities. One of the most important of these will mean that the person will not have independent attitudes and behaviors. This understanding will also mean that the person will not be free in his/her feelings, thoughts and behaviors, but dependent on others.
To some extent, dependency will also mean that a person is unable to make his or her own decisions. A person who cannot make his/her own decisions cannot live himself/herself and cannot be happy. Again, for the addicted person, since his/her behavior is controlled and he/she has the logic of "what will my parents say", it is inevitable that he/she will be unhappy because this will mean that he/she will not be able to live himself/herself.
So, what should the education system be like for people to live their individuality? The first thing that needs to be said is that family education should address the attitude of the parents.
First of all, it is important that parents behave democratically towards children. Children have to participate in decisions that are influenced by their parents. Again, children's sense of curiosity should be stimulated by encouraging them to ask questions, etc.
On the other hand, the education provided at school is important. First and foremost, the whole school climate must be democratic. Educational administrators have important duties in ensuring this understanding.
However, it is also questionable that education administrators appointed with political concerns will have democratic attitudes and behaviors.
