The first analogy that comes to mind when it comes to crime is the swamp/fly analogy.
‘It is not enough just to kill the flies, you need to drain the swamp’, this anology expresses that it is not enough to fight against criminals, efforts must also be made to end crime.
‘The saying ’Let he who is without sin cast the first stone' also points out that the concept of sin/crime is possible for every human being.
As is well known, these days every segment of society, from politics to sports, from the media to the business community, from the art world to high society and the people on the street, is associated with ‘crime’ and we sleep and wake up with one operation after another in the fight against crime.
Let me make a different analogy on the phenomenon of ‘crime’, which is as old as human history.
Instead of the swamp/fly analogy, I would like to explain the issue of crime and criminals with the open wound/fly analogy.
As in the common analogy, the criminal is again depicted as a ‘fly’, but in this analogy I replace ‘crime‘ with 'open wound'.
Just like a swamp attracts flies, an open wound attracts flies and after a while it also starts to produce flies because of the larvae left by the flies.
Crime = Open wound
Criminal = Fly
Society = Body
An open wound on the body can take two forms.
Wounds can be caused by external intervention. Sores can develop on the body due to an illness in the body.
In both cases, the first step is to clean the wound and the surrounding area and to dress the wound regularly until it closes.
If the open wound is not properly cared for, the wound attracts flies and maggots with a larva that is released.
Sudden trauma in society is like an external wound to the body.
For example, the migrant problem,
For example, the evacuation of villages and forced migration of people,
for example a war or a major economic depression.
These are not actually problems that arise from the structure of society itself, but problems that arise from other forces, sometimes from other forces, sometimes from the lines of the ruling class of society. In other words, wounds.
As we said, if open wounds are caused by an external intervention and are not fatal, the wound will scab and heal in a short time if the bleeding is stopped and followed by proper care.
However, it is different if the sores are a symptom of a condition in the body.
Wounds caused by a dysfunction of internal organs, organ failure, a virus in the blood or a similar condition will be treated differently.
Just as organ failure can cause some open wounds in the body, income failure or poverty, if left unresolved for a long time, will cause open wounds in society, that is, crime.
Whether the wound is opened by an external intervention or due to a dysfunction in the body, wound care, combating the flies that the wound will attract and ensuring sterilization will be the first intervention to be made.
However, if the wound is caused by a condition in the body, then more detailed tests will be needed to find the source of that condition.
Blood tests, imaging, examinations and evaluations by specialists from different departments will diagnose the disease that causes sores on the body and if treatment is not started, no matter how clean you keep the wound, new wounds will start to open and it will be impossible to heal existing wounds.
And in the end death will be inevitable.
For this reason, there are great risks when politics alone attempts to diagnose and treat the causes of crime in society. In fact, the reason for the existence of different fields of expertise in society is to find solutions with a common mind in such situations.
Just as surgical intervention is not decided for a patient without a comprehensive consultation, intervention in social issues also requires a comprehensive consultation by experts.
Otherwise, whenever we encounter a crime that disturbs the conscience of society, the place is immediately terrorized by the noise of the crowd calling for the return of the death penalty.
This is like suggesting that for every open wound, the organ of injury should be cut out and discarded.
However, the aim of medicine is not only to keep the body alive. It is to keep the body alive in a healthy way, preserving its integrity as much as possible first.
If the wound is deep enough to require surgical intervention, not only a skilled surgeon but also a good anesthesia team will be needed.
How successful can an operation be when the patient is conscious and bleeding?
We know that some surgical interventions require local anesthesia and some require general anesthesia, i.e. narcosis.
This is decided by evaluating the depth of the wound, the organ in which it is located, how long the surgery will take and of course the other health problems of the patient (blood pressure, diabetes, acute heart problems, etc.).
A wrong surgical intervention may result in loss of organs and tissues and may also result in the patient being left on the table! This is undoubtedly the most undesirable situation.
If we return to the issue of combating crime and criminals, which is the main reason for establishing the analogy, while the criminal is fought by the judicial organization and law enforcement, the fight against crime requires the political institution that governs the country to act together with expert segments of society.
Otherwise, it can cause great losses in society and even an irreversible state of social death. The analogy of ‘decay’ on everyone's lips today is no coincidence.
Obviously, for a long time, there has not been the right interventions in the fight against crime with the necessary speed, so that even the steps taken today to fight crime are not enough to stop the decay that crime creates in the body.
What if the cadres who are supposed to treat the wounds before they become fatal are also exposed to open wounds and the flies have larvae in those wounds too?
Then we'll start the treatment there first.
Airplane announcements say ‘put the oxygen mask on yourself first and then on the person next to you’.
In first aid and rescue interventions, first of all, the life safety of the rescuer is ensured and his/her life is not put at risk. Because if he/she is alive, he/she will be able to help the injured person or the person under the rubble.
This is precisely why we must start by treating the corruption in the committees that will treat society.
In order to do this, if the society does not have medical knowledge about sterilization and treatment, they can produce some solutions based on their ancient knowledge. Perhaps we will start by treating the ‘health team’ first with the methods that our grandmothers and mothers used for sterilization.
Don't skimp on the vinegar (reason), garlic (willpower) and clean cheesecloth (conscience)!
