Creating a Living School Vision

It is important that all of our schools continue their education and training activities by determining a living school vision.

The education system in our schools is static due to its overly centralized structure, its top-down command-and-control functioning, the insufficient authority of school administrators, and the lack of any intervention by school staff in the school system.

In this sense, we cannot say that visioning and implementation activities in schools are carried out on a scientific basis.

According to the Turkish Language Institution, vision is defined as ‘outlook’ as a noun, as well as 'ideal', 'foresight' and, especially in management science, 'forward vision'.

Vision is the perspective of where an organization will be in the future. Organizations that know where they want to be in the future will not be past-referenced organizations or organizations that fluctuate in daily changes, but future-referenced organizations that try to create tomorrow from today. The certainty of the desired future state will also allow the organization to be consistent in its current choices.

The visioning process takes place in five steps. These steps are

  • The first step in the visioning process is to identify what is important in what the organization does and to achieve a firm commitment to it,
  • The second step is to identify what obstacles stand in the way of realizing these aspirations,
  • It is then determined what resources are available to realize the aspirations,
  • Finally, the factors that lead to success are investigated and concrete practices are put forward.

Once the vision of the organization is established, the strategic management process and the implementation of all managerial decisions will be developed according to this vision. In this context, our schools and institutions also have a vision. While determining these visions, it is important that school employees actively participate in the process and that the school acts like a living organism.

When determining the school vision, it is necessary to see schools as living systems instead of perceiving them as mechanical structures. As a result of this, it is important that all school employees actively think about the visioning process, actively participate in the educational activities to be carried out, that the educational activities to be determined should be student-centered, that multiple intelligences should be accepted instead of homogeneity, that active learning methods should be chosen instead of rote learning methods, and that a vision that is constantly changing and renewed in line with the determined vision should be created.

Such a vision is a vision of a living, active, changing, developing, transforming and renewing school.

It is important that all of our schools continue their education and training activities by determining a living school vision.
