CHP deputies were able to enter Esenyurt Municipality after 12 days. CHP mayor of Esenyurt Ahmet Özer had won the local elections on March 31, 2023 with .4 votes. However, on October 30, 2024, he was detained on charges of being a member of a terrorist organization and was arrested by the court. Özer was dismissed from office and a trustee was appointed on October 31, 2024.
Since Özer's detention, CHP municipality council members were not allowed to enter Esenyurt Municipality and CHP MPs wanted to enter the municipality building but were prevented from doing so.
Basarir announced
Upon this, CHP started a vigil in front of Esenyurt Municipality. Today, Group Deputy Chair Ali Mahir Başarır, Deputy Chair Erhan Adem, Istanbul MP Yunus Emre, Bursa MP Nurhayat Altaca Kayışoğlu and Diyarbakır MP Sezgin Tanrıkulu were in front of the municipality.
The CHP delegation was allowed to enter the municipality 11 days later after Başarır called Numan Kurtulmuş, the Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
Başarır said at the exit that they did not meet or talk to the appointed trustee.
Başarır announced the development on his Twitter account, “With our persistent struggle, we did not let the honor of our MPs be trampled, we overcame all obstacles and entered the Esenyurt Municipality. We will not bow down to those who prevent the people from receiving services and those who trample democracy underfoot! We will continue to defend the will of the people of Esenyurt and stand firm against injustice! No to the trustee!”.
Erdoğan spoke, new investigation against Özer
Meanwhile, a new investigation has been launched by the prosecutor's office against Ahmet Özer, who is still under arrest, on charges of financing terrorism.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan targeted Özer in his speech yesterday, saying, “The fact that he appears to be a member of another party does not change the truth.”.
It did not go unnoticed that new investigations were launched after Erdoğan's speech.
