Atakan Sonmez: “What is happening in Turkey is a complete institutional collapse”

"Individual crime or immorality exists everywhere in the world. But there is only one way for crime and immorality to become systemic: Institutional collapse. This is precisely the fundamental problem Turkey is facing right now."

HALKWEB-Dilek Bozkurt Journalist Atakan Sönmez, who evaluated the global system and Turkey's current situation in a television program, made striking statements. Sönmez stated that the dysfunctionalization of institutions has led to a serious crisis both in Turkey and in the world and said, “The only way for crime and immorality to become systemic is institutional collapse.”.

Atakan Sönmez argued that institutions around the world are being deliberately weakened and that this situation has radically shaken the social structure. Drawing attention to the commodification of human labor and value, Sönmez emphasized the gravity of the situation with the analogy of slave markets.

“We are going back to the times of slave markets”

Sönmez criticized the effects of economic and social policies on human beings:
“Today, unfortunately, we are going back to the times when people could be bought and sold directly, when those slave markets were established. This is a global problem, not just Turkey's. However, Turkey, while pretending to challenge the global system, is right in the middle of this process, from the economic policies it implements to the crises we are experiencing with the collapse of the state.”

Criticism of “Personal Rule” with the Example of Trump

Stating that institutions have been replaced by personal bargains, Sönmez criticized the use of the public budget as a means of personal advertisement, giving an example from US President Donald Trump. Sönmez said, “When Trump allocates a budget for a state investment, he says, ‘If you give my name, I will provide this funding. This is not a coincidence; there is a systematic effort to destroy institutions all over the world.’.

“Crime and immorality have become systemic”

Reminding that institutions were built as a result of long struggles and great efforts of humanity, Sönmez argued that pushing these structures aside leads society to “systematic immorality”:
“Individual crime or immorality exists everywhere in the world. But there is only one way for crime and immorality to become systemic: Institutional collapse. This is precisely the fundamental problem Turkey is facing right now.”
