Updating Marxist-Leninist Theory, New Forms of Imperialism and Redefining Revolutionary Strategy

Socialism is not an option but a historical necessity.

In Lenin's classical analysis, the imperialist stage of capitalism was defined in terms of five main features: the concentration and monopolization of capital, the domination of finance capital, the export of capital, the formation of international monopolies and the division of the world between the great powers. This analysis perfectly explained the structure of imperialism at the beginning of the 20th century. But the new forms capitalism has taken in the 21st century have made it necessary to expand this theory. Because imperialism today operates not only through military occupations, but also through digital exploitation, financial hegemony, data colonization, platform capitalism and global supply chains. Therefore, updating Marxist-Leninist theory is not only a theoretical need, but also a strategic imperative of the revolutionary struggle.

The New Economic Base of Imperialism, Digital Monopolies and Data Capitalism

In Lenin's time, the economic basis of imperialism was industrial monopolies and finance capital. Today, a new element has been added to this structure: digital monopolies. Companies like Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple, Microsoft have become not only economic but also political and ideological powers. These companies control the data obtained from the digital activities of the world's population, make huge profits by processing this data, and have become a power over the States. Therefore, one of the main characteristics of 21st century imperialism is data capitalism. Data capitalism is the current form of classical colonialism. In the past, land, minerals and labor were exploited; today, data is exploited.

The Absolute Dominance of Finance Capital, Debt and Economic Occupation

In the 21st century, finance capital has completely disconnected from production and turned to creating value through speculation. This is both the cause and the consequence of capitalism's structural crisis. Finance capital controls states and peoples through debt mechanisms and determines the economic policies of countries through the IMF, the World Bank and credit rating agencies. For this reason, many countries today are forced to determine economic policies according to the interests of finance capital, rather than according to the needs of their own people. This situation can be defined as economic occupation.

New Military Forms of Imperialism, Proxy Wars and Private Military Companies

Under classical imperialism, military occupations were carried out directly by states. Today, instead of direct intervention, the imperialist powers wage proxy wars. These wars are waged through regional collaborationist classes and private military companies. The main features of these new military forms are as follows: a. The imperialist powers do not assume direct responsibility. b. The reaction of the peoples is directed towards local actors. c. The cost of war decreases. d. Regional fragmentation deepens. e. Energy lines and trade routes are more easily controlled. Therefore, the Third World War is not a world war in the classical sense, but a multi-layered, protracted and fragmented form of war.

Weakening of the Nation-State, Rise of the Corporate-State

The digitalization and financialization of capitalism has weakened the power of the Nation-State and led to the rise of the Corporate-State. Today, multinational corporations have more economic power than many states. These corporations have become not only an economic but also a political and ideological power. Therefore, the state has become an instrument representing the interests of Global capital, not the national bourgeoisie.

Redefining Revolutionary Strategy, Imperative of Global Struggle

The updating of Marxist-Leninist theory necessitates the updating of revolutionary strategy. Because today capital is globalized, production chains are globalized, finance is globalized, digital exploitation is globalized. Therefore, the struggle of the working class must also be globalized. The basic elements of the new revolutionary strategy are the following.
1. International Working Class Solidarity If capital is global, labor must also be global.
2. The Fight Against Digital Exploitation Data capitalism is a new form of exploitation.
3. Resistance to Financial Exploitation Debt mechanisms destroy the economic independence of peoples.
4. Organizing New Forms of Proletarianization The platform proletariat, the digital proletariat and the debt proletariat must be organized.
5. Resistance against the New Military Forms of Imperialism Proxy wars, private military companies and the militarization of energy lines must be exposed.

“The Current Meaning of the Thesis ”Barbarism or Socialism"

Rosa Luxemburg's words have taken on a more concrete historical meaning today. Because the deepening of the capitalist crisis has confronted humanity with three fundamental threats.

1. Ecological collapse.

2. Deepening global inequality.

3. Perpetual wars.

Socialism is therefore not an option but a historical necessity.

Conclusion, Reconstruction of Marxist-Leninist Theory

The success of the revolutionary struggle today depends on the updating of Marxist-Leninist theory. This updating is possible by preserving the essence of the theory, analyzing the new forms of imperialism and redefining the revolutionary strategy. Therefore, Marxist-Leninist theory must be rebuilt according to the conditions of the 21st century.
