The state of political deadlock is deepened by the fact that a structure claiming to be a social democracy is moving away from its roots. In this context, it is possible to make a brief assessment focusing on “despair” and “axis shift”.

Identity Confusion and Ideological Gap in the Crisis of Social Democracy

The main problem facing the main opposition in Turkish politics is not only a matter of personnel, but also a deep problem of backbone and identity. In essence, social democracy is an ideology that defends the rights of labor, prioritizes public investment and promotes social justice on the basis of secularism. However, in today's practice, these values have been replaced by pragmatic alliances without ideological depth and an effort to “look good to the right”.

1-Ideological Compromises and Congregational Politics:
It is an understandable strategy for a social democratic party to reach out to broad segments of society. However, when this effort is made by compromising secularism or by aligning itself with community structures, the party's historical connection with its own electorate is severed. Approaches with a “sectarian flavor” lead to the sacrifice of long-term goals of social enlightenment for short-term vote calculations. This situation triggers apoliticalization by reinforcing the perception that “everyone is alike” among the masses who expect hope.

2- Escape from Social Democracy:
True social democracy requires the state to take an active role in education, health and production. At the point we have reached today, an opposition understanding trapped in marketist economic models cannot offer a radical alternative to the economic bottleneck of the people. The fact that instead of a production manifesto that puts labor and production at the center, only populist rhetoric is sufficient is the biggest proof that social democracy has been eviscerated.

3-Tenure and Trust Problems:
Politics is not only about names, but the mentality represented by the names is decisive. The inability of the current cadres to establish a genuine connection with the problems of the people and their loyalty-oriented structures rather than merit weaken their potential to be “hope”. Society expects a decisive and sincere stance in line with its cultural and economic realities.

In conclusion, if the opposition wants to become a center of attraction again, it must stop trying to be like others and return to its own core values. It is imperative to redefine social democracy not just as a label but as a radical quest for justice that touches every aspect of life.

Happy Eid, everyone.
