As is well known, individualism, to some extent as a result of the liberal view, refers to the belief that each individual in society working for his/her own benefit is also for the benefit of society. In other words, it is a doctrine that considers the interests of individuals to be superior and more important than social interests. First of all, what kind of an understanding individualism is and its consequences and then the relevance of this understanding to education will be discussed.
According to the author, individualism is the most ordinary attitude and behavior. Because individualism is to some extent selfishness and an understanding that puts self-interest before society. People with these qualities cannot think of social reference. Again, people with a selfish attitude are insensitive to the socio-economic problems of society.
First of all, we need to think about what to do in order not to raise individualistic people... We need to start with family education. However, our education in this field is not at the desired level. In other words, the level of education of mothers and fathers is far from raising ideal, individualistic children.
Again, domestic violence is a factor that increases selfishness.
Again, parents have to be democratic with their children if they don't want them to be selfish.
The democratic parental attitude is as follows: Instead of an authoritarian parental attitude that does not give the child enough attention and love, that puts pressure on the child to behave as he/she wants, it can be said that the child should be approached with a democratic attitude that allows him/her to behave freely within certain limits, that meets his/her physical and emotional needs in a realistic way, that helps him/her to achieve his/her goals, that encourages him/her to find solutions to his/her problems, that provides trust and support, that does not put pressure on him/her to succeed, that applies consistent discipline, and that shows love and affection to him/her without being overprotective.
On the other hand, the education given at school is effective in raising selfish individuals. What needs to be done first and foremost is to abolish exams that force students to compete.
Again, democratic teacher attitudes and behaviors gain importance. In this respect, teachers should involve students in the teaching-learning process.
In addition, the teacher should apply teaching methods that emphasize the group process. The teacher should give students the right to speak when necessary.
